How do I purify my investment returns?
You apply the fund's published purification rate to the income you received, and give that amount away without expecting reward or a tax benefit.
Tazkiyah is the cleansing of the small impermissible portion of an otherwise permissible return. Two models are in use:
- The fund donates the impure portion on investors' behalf before distributing - nothing further is required of you
- The fund publishes a rate and you donate it yourself - for example, a 0.5% rate on $2,000 of distributions means $10 given away
The fund's annual disclosure states which model applies and the rate for the period. Purification is separate from zakat and does not replace it.
