Can I lose money in a halal investment?
Yes. "Halal" describes compliance with Shariah principles. It says nothing about safety, and it is not a guarantee.
The risks are the ordinary ones:
- Capital loss - the value of your investment can fall, and can stay down
- Income variability - distributions are not promised and can be reduced or suspended
- Market and concentration risk - screening reduces the investable universe, which can concentrate exposure
- Credit risk on the assets a fund holds
- Liquidity risk - you may not be able to withdraw when you want to
Match the product to your timeframe. A five-year asset is not somewhere to keep money you need next year.
