What happens if an ETF or managed fund closes?
You are normally given notice, the assets are sold or transferred, and the net proceeds are paid to investors. It is orderly, but it is not free of consequences.
What typically happens: a notice period, possible suspension of trading or applications, sale of the portfolio or transfer to another fund, then payment of net proceeds. Being cashed out is a disposal, which can crystallise a capital gain or loss and take the decision about timing out of your hands.
A small or shrinking FUM is a closure-risk indicator, not a prediction. InvestHAQ shows FUM and fund status on every profile.
